A photographic survey of 62 elements of a thirteenth-century figurative decorative scheme located on vertical surfaces across twelfth and thirteenth-century fabric in the nave, sanctuary, crypt and on the west facade of Rochester Cathedral.

SCS16r02 A photographic survey of fragments of a thirteenth-century figurative decorative scheme at St Clement’s Church, Sandwich: with a similar fragment at the church of St Mary-the-Virgin, Newington

A photographic survey of 6 fragments of a thirteenth-century figurative decorative scheme located on the Norman crossing piers of St Clement’s Church, Sandwich. A photograph and trace is also provided of a similar fragment on a Norman pier in the quire of the church of St Mary-the-Virgin, Newington.

RCL16r03 A photographic survey of ledger stones at Rochester Cathedral

A photographic survey of 106 ledger stones in the nave, north and south transepts, sanctuary and crypt of Rochester Cathedral in accordance with the Ledgerstone Survey of England and Wales.

RCL16r04 Scale drawings of Rochester’s cathedrals

An update to the measured survey drawings produced by Carden and Godfrey in 2009 of Rochester Cathedral from a laser survey conducted in 2007, including retraced scale drawings of the extent of the Romanesque Cathedrals of Rochester from 604 AD to 1215 AD originally published by William St John Hope in 1898.

A photographic and structure-from-motion three-dimensional modelling survey of 23 medieval brass indents at Rochester Cathedral.

RCL17r03 A thirteenth-century altar slab fragment at Rochester Cathedral

A previously unrecorded fragment of a thirteenth-century altar slab, two-thirds of full-length, identified within a garden feature at King’s Orchard, Rochester is described here, alongside a photographic record and a structure from motion 3D model of this fragment in its unaltered position.

RCL17r04 The influence of sun-paths in understanding the separation of the eleventh-century cloister and east end at Rochester Cathedral priory

Incorporating a knowledge of sun-paths into Bishop Gundulf’s motivations in designing the unique layout of Rochester Cathedral and its priory may help explain the non-traditional siting of the cloisters as detached from the contemporary east end of the building.

RCL17r05 Structure-from-motion models of two carved stone fragments from Anglo-Saxon Rochester

Two carved stone fragments within the lapidarium collection at Rochester Cathedral are described, identified in the 1980s and dated to the eleventh-century CE. Scale photographs and structure from motion models are provided alongside an interpretation as to their original form and function.

RCL17r06 A photographic survey of ship graffiti at Rochester Cathedral

A photographic survey of 12 medieval ship graffiti on a pier in the south nave arcade and 3 on a pier in the crypt of Rochester Cathedral. These forms of graffiti are thought to be a form of ex-voto cult mark of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of those in peril on the sea.

A photographic survey of 46 cross and crucifix graffiti at Rochester Cathedral. This form of graffiti has previously been thought to be associated with pilgrimage, although evidence for this relationship at Rochester is perhaps lacking based on so few examples in comparison to other forms.

A photographic survey of 181 arc, circle and multifoil graffiti at Rochester Cathedral, thought to be of a votive nature. This form of graffiti in particular can be seen at Rochester Cathedral to cluster around spiritually significant areas of the medieval building.

A photographic survey of 127 symbolic graffiti at Rochester Cathedral, largely in the form of a W or two overlapping V letters, that are thought to be marks of the cult of the Virgin Mary. Stylised forms of the letters A and I are also surveyed.

A photographic survey of 170 gravestones within the graveyards surrounding Rochester Cathedral, incorporating Green Church Haw, those in the lay cemetery outside the west front and the castle moat, including a raking light survey of the most worn inscriptions.
