Abstract:

The Perry Lithgow Partnership was appointed by the Dean and Chapter to undertake conservation of the medieval wall paintings in the Crypt as part of a wider project of Crypt and Library development funded in part by the Heritage Lottery Fund. In addition to conservation of the medieval painted decoration and plaster, the Crypt redevelopment project includes new heating and flooring; the glazing of a number of bays to create an exhibition area in the Gundulf crypt; and the installation of a lift, servery, and other facilities. Environmental monitoring of the potential impact of these proposed changes on the wall paintings is on-going.
