The third phase of conservation of paintings in the crypt was started on 18th January 1988 and lasted 12 weeks. Two main areas were included in this programme of work: firstly the two bays in the north-west corner of the crypt, Nos. 40 and 33 on the ground plan, and secondly, the bay adjoining St. Ithamar’s Chapel – No. 18 on the plan. The work was carried out in conjunction with students from the Courtauld Institute of Art Wall Paintings course, in two groups of three students, each group working for a period of 6 weeks.
